Arabic enters the Coptic Orthodox Church.
After the Arab conquest of Egypt, the Coptic language was still in use and it was spoken until the time of the caliphate Al Hahkim Be Amr Allah. He attacked the Coptic language and ordered a decree to cease the use of the Coptic language in the houses, public places, and churches. The punishment for whoever talked in Coptic was the cutting of their tongue off. He even applied this rule to the women, and children, both boys and girls. If any parent speaks to their children in Coptic then they will cut off their tongues. This continued for the rulers who came after the Hahkim. This is how the Coptic language was kept in the church and monastery wall only.
During the papacy of Pope Gabriel II Ibn Terk, the 70th Pope of The Coptic Orthodox Church, the Arabic language had already become the language that the government was using for ages. The pope saw that the Christians who were the scribes in the government were being let go of because they didn’t know the main language that the government relied on for everything. This made everything hard for the Christians, but they overcame and they started to learn Arabic by writing Arabic using the Coptic language. They called it ladders or (سلالم ). The remains of these manuscripts remain in the monastery of the Surian. When the leaders found that the Christians who were very loyal were diligent learners and learned the Arabic language, they allowed them to return to their works. So during the papacy of the above pope, appeared a new decree. The decree said the following that we will start reading the Arabic interpretations of the Coptic readings, but we must first read the full reading in the COPTIC LANGUAGE. So the Arabic language did enter into the church and after it did we started slowly getting rid of the Coptic language.
Coptic should not be replaced by the Arabic language, because the Coptic language is the language of the church and the language of the Church of Alexandria. We must go back to the Coptic manuscripts because this is the original, and the base for our church teachings. We ought to show that we are loyal to our Coptic church and try to preserve as much of this Coptic language as we can. We must teach it to our kids and keep it engraved in our hearts.
